Mrs. Colleen Davis
Mrs. Colleen Davis is the 3 year old preschool teacher at Holy Name. She has been teaching for 7 years, since the 2009-2010 school year. She grew up in Omaha with two siblings. Colleen attended Creighton University where she pursued her love of science and majored in Chemistry. She graduated from the Creighton honors program magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry degree (B.S. Chm.). Colleen then enjoyed her career as a chemist in the field of environmental chemistry for 13 years.
In addition to her preschool teaching position, Colleen is an involved parent at Holy Name School as her daughter has attended the school since 3 yr old preschool. She has been a volunteer at Holy Name for nearly 9 years: over 1 year volunteering in the infant/toddler room, and nearly 8 years volunteering in various capacities in the school. This affords her the opportunity to pursue her passion of nurturing and supporting the education of young children.
Mrs. Davis is a member of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), as well as the State and Local affiliates: NeAEYC and OAEYC. She attends OAEYC's professional development conferences/workshops each semester. She enjoys furthering her education and attends early childhood workshops throughout each year dealing with a variety of topics including: early literacy through music and movement, multiple intelligences, development of early literacy skills, learning through play, early years are learning years, nature play, and eliminating childhood hunger to name a few. She also has been instrumental in assisting with the planning and presenting of parent workshops for preschool parents. These workshops provide ideas as well as take home, ready to use materials for parents to use with their children. Parent Workshop topics have included promoting literacy and music; and handwriting and the arts.
Outside of teaching, Colleen loves spending time with her daughter and husband. Her hobbies include all types of papercrafting (cardmaking, scrapbooking, stamping, etc.) and she cultivates this creative-side in her daughter. She also enjoys reading (and listening to her daughter read!), flower gardening, and attending local arts performances with her family. Colleen and her husband are active members of the Holy Name Parent Advisory Group and the Holy Name Parent Ambassadors Group and assist with both groups' sponsored school activities, meetings, and planning activities. She also volunteers periodically in the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade science lab, which allows her to share her love of science.
As a teacher, Mrs. Davis seeks to initiate and foster the exploration and love of learning in each of her young learners. She believes reading to children is one of the best things we can do as teachers and parents to help children's development. Through compassion and enthusiasm she encourages discovery in her students through play and investigating the world around them with the foundation being respect for self, respect for others, and respect for environment. She eagerly shares and lives the motto with her students that learning = fun!
